Welcome to the Children's Poetry Bookshelf
CPB was set up by the Poetry Book Society to support poetry written for children.
Its aim is to encourage children to read and enjoy poetry and it operates as a
The books we offer are chosen by a panel of expert Selectors, whose
task is to find the
very best children's poetry.
This website is totally dedicated to children's poetry. We hope it is a place where children will come to discover mnay fine children's poems and to take part in activities, including quizzes and poem puzzles. We also encourage interactivity and will post children's own poems, reviews and comments, making the site a lively and entertaining place.
Fun from poetry
We believe that children can get
a tremendous amount of fun from poetry and that it can help in many ways with
developing their reading and writing skills. We also feel that we, as adults,
need to encourage kids to develop a love of poetry if we are to have an adult
audience for it.
For teachers, librarians, parents and other adults
The site provides information which will help adults with providing poetry for children. There are introductory worksheets and a reading list which will help you to find the best children’s poetry books. Bringing poetry to children is very much in adult hands but we are convinced that the children themselves really enjoy the rhythm and rhyme. Read what our distinguished patrons have to say about the importance of poetry for children. Erstwhile Poet Laureate Andrew Motion offers his own perspective; and there’s also an article from Julie Johnston, Librarian at the Scottish Poetry Library, about children’s poetry in libraries.
